Considerata una delle principali figure del movimento ottico-cinetico internazionale, Apollonio si avvicinò e partecipò alle ricerche dei movimenti d'avanguardia degli anni '60 (tra cui i gruppi N e T e di Padova e Milano e il NTrc, partecipando alla mostra "Nova Tendencija 3" a Zagabria nel 1961)
